Our sister Haiku club, Maui Hototogisu Kai (MHK) had its September Kukai on Sept. 9th.

Kendai (proposed seasonal word) of the month were: grapes and a word “Sawayaka” which means “cool and clear” in Japanese to express the autumn atmosphere.

The “moon” at all stage of shapes or shades (from full moon to crescent moon or, even the “no moon (due to the rain))” is also a featuring Kidai (seasonal word) of the month.

It is always hard to start any new thing.  Let alone attempting to start writing Haiku, or a blog. 

There’s a famous Ku by Kaga no Chyjo-jo (1703-1775).

Cuckoo, oh cuckoo…

 Repeating  the name over again

     The day has dawned

This Ku was made when she met her mentor, Rogenbo, for the first time.  The sensei gave her  a Kendai (proposed theme) “Hototogisu”  and told her to make a Ku and bring it to him the next day.  This was her answering Ku and the sensei liked it and accepted her as his pupil.  Original Japanese: 　ほととぎす　ほととぎすとて明けにけり　　（千代女）
